Great system. September 13, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ok, where can I start? Oh...yes...THIS SYSTEM ROCKS. Sure, Sony lures you in with the extra crappy parts such as a DVD player that barely works, but this system is BUILT TO PLAY GAMES AND PLAY GAMES ONLY. Also, the graphics are great, and the controller fits like a glove. There are so many cool exclusives too, like:br /br /The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III, VIewtiful Joe, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Party 4, Mario Party 5, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition, Tales of Symphonia, 1080 Avalanche, Custom Robo.br /br /And games that are coming out:br /br /Metroid Prime II: Echoes, The Legend of Zelda(working title), Pikmin II, and Viewtiful Joe II.br /br /There are 4 controller ports...unlike the PS2...(C'mon, the SEGA DREAMCAST HAS FOUR; WHY DO YOU, PS2, HAVE TO HAVE 2??)br /br /There is a good wireless controller for the GC..the Wavebird...the ones for the other major systems SUCK.br /br /GC is NOT filled with kiddie games...Metal Gear Solid? Metroid Prime? Resident Evil? C'MON!br /br /GC has cool features you can buy to tie it in with the Game Boy Advance...the Gameboy Player, and GBA-NGC cables. It is a good idea, though, it costs so much to play games like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Zelda-Four Swords Adventures 4-Player...Nintendo got greedy then.br /br /The Gamecube is also very small and portable. The XBox is massive! br /br /I just wish Nintendo supports online play...br /br /So, there you have it. GameCube rocks. Have $99? GET ONE! You'll be happy you did.
Great Console (with One of the Best Games of All Time) August 27, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you don't yet have a Gamecube, this bundle is the perfect introduction to a superb gaming console. The Gamecube doesn't play DVDs or CDs, it just does what it does very very well, showcasing some of the best games you'll play on any system anywhere. Graphically, Gamecube games look great, play fast, and (in most cases) without the load times or lags that can so detract from the gaming experience. And the system is incredibly easy to work with and to hook up -- it literally takes a few minutes, tops.br /br /This special Zelda package makes the perfect introduction to the Gamecube platform because it includes one of the finest games I've ever played (Zelda: The Ocarina of Time), now seamlessly integrated into the Gamecube environment. I'd highly recommend this particular system purchase just for the classic Zelda games alone -- in addition to OOT and other classic Link games, Majora's Mask is almost as much fun, although it's got a different feel to it, and isn't quite as seamlessly adapted into the Gamecube platform (as a transfer from the earlier platform, the game's resolution is noticeably less sharp than other Gamecube games, but it's amazing how beautiful the game still is -- and how fast you get used to it).br /br /Other Zelda enthusiasts already know what I'm talking about -- these games manage to be smart, fun, adventurous, creative, exciting, and even humorous, all while maintaining a feeling of magic, wonder and innocence that is very very hard to capture in a game or to describe. That Ocarina of Time is able to do so is a small miracle in itself, and it does so in a rather dark and brooding fairytale environment that may surprise players who only know Zelda from the cheery cel animation of Windwaker (but I much prefer this 'classic' look myself, and was psyched to hear that Nintendo is returning to this look for the next Zelda title).br /br /In Ocarina of Time, a young boy must save the world (Hyrule), discover his own gifts, and literally and figuratively grow to manhood. The game plays with the entire concept of time, both in its puzzles and storyline, as well as in the Ocarina, the magical instrument Link uses as a powerful resource in the game. The world Link must explore and save is beautifully rendered -- from majestic mountains, to eerie lava dungeons and icebound caves, to genuinely creepy graveyards and wastelands. The dungeons and environments Link must explore are fastidiously rendered and very detailed (and are far more complex than those in Windwaker) -- by the end of the game you'll feel like you explored a place that actually exists.br /br /The characters Link meets are complex, funny, and brave, and Link's companion in his quests, the horse Epona, is a standout. The horse doesn't simply team up with Link, but must first be met, fed, tamed, raced, and won! Only after a series of challenging (but very do-able) tasks does Epona become Link's noble steed, and the experience of riding Epona over the fields of Hyrule, leaping fences and battling bad guys, is one of the most truly poignant gaming experiences I've ever had. (And yes I know that sentence makes me a huge geek. But I wear it proudly.)br /br /OOT does have some surprisingly scary and creepy elements (especially in the "later" and more grown-up time period of Link's play), but for young teens and up, it's easily a game for all ages, one that will enchant adults as easily as kids. As always with Zelda, gameplay is seamless and easy to get used to, and the game introduces the player to his or her controls so seamlessly that most will never need to read the manual. And also as usual, Link's battles are never just button-mashers, but instead offer a creative variety of swordplay and battle options.br /br /And these are just a few examples of how rich the Zelda universe is, and how much thought has gone into every puzzle and character of the game -- there are dozens more. After playing dozens of games for the Gamecube, Ocarina of Time is still a 10 for me -- by far the best game I've ever played to date. By the time you're done, Hyrule is more than a game environment, it's a fantastical universe, and one that feels as real as Middle-Earth, or Narnia, or Earthsea. Enjoy your visit there -- you won't forget it.

Why is this product being advertised as:p*Nintendo video game systembr*Includes one controller, manuals, and cables to connect to the TVbr*Compact design with 4 built-in game controller portsbr*Plays a wide variety of games for all agesbr*Includes disc with four complete classic Zelda gamespAs far as I can tell, the people selling this are ONLY selling the Zelda game and NOT including the gamecube itself. Isn't this false advertising?

Best Platform on the Market for a TRUE gamer May 28, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
All of us Gamecube lovers can well admit that it may not have all the beef of a chunky american system like the microsoft XBOX but lets face it, why do I need to spend extra money on a system simply because it plays DVD's and stores music, Don't we all have a DVD player and a computer for that which do it much more efficiently and at higher quality. When shopping for a console you should look for what is important like maybe... games. And the gamcube carries the biggest hitters like Zelda the windwaker, Metroid prime, Custom Robo, Smash Bros. (by the way Gary Schulze in your review you stated that Metroid prime and Zelda were release games... they weren't they came out about 2 years after the release. If your going to bash something do a little research.). Don't misunderstand I love the ps2 and the Xbox has it's perks but the best game Microsoft has to offer is Halo but now you can get Halo on the Computer and it looks a heck of a lot better and FPS's are a lot better to play W/ a mouse. Trust me if you buy a gamecube you'll see that the overall quality and inovation Nintendo puts into all it's products. The graphics are smooth and Frame rates are high and since developers are finally learning to develop acording to the systems highest potential the graphics are looking even beter (Check out the E3 shots of Zelda and Resident Evil 4).The controller is comfortable and the compact size of the system makes it easy to transport. If your in the Console Market and what something purely for the gameplay get yourself a cube and while your at it get yourself a ps2 also, they will give you exactly what you want good games and less extra crap.
