as advertised... January 5, 2009 Nothing original to say. Our 6-year old son was delighted with his present and continues to enjoy it! I hesitated to wait for the DSi but the new features only seem to add complexity to the concept and are therefore not justified for the age of our son.br /the silver color is ok even though not as glossy as the picture can imply.
A Story of Reliability January 5, 2009 My daughter just pulled my son's DS out of a snowbank. My son lost it 3 weeks ago and it has snowed 6 inches, rained, and been as low as 3 degrees out. Brought it inside and shook the water out of it and let it warm up and not only does the unit still work perfectly so does the game that was in it. Everyone told me they were rugged but this is over the top. Unbelieveable!
The DS is a wonderful handheld video game console, but it's only as good as the games you put on it January 4, 2009 We have two Nintendo DSes: one for each of the kids. I do recommend getting different colors because that makes it easy to differentiate them. br /br /My husband gave me a white one as a birthday present a few years ago. It had Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!on it, which is a game I hate, so I quicky gave it back to him. (Seriously, Brain Age is a great way to send the birthday message "I think you're getting senile.") He then gave it to our son. br /br /We have since bought our daughter a pink game unit and many more games. There are some games I have found addictive, so all in all I would call this a good video game console for anyone of any age--provided you buy the right games to go with it.br /br /The best thing about the DS is the touch screen, which makes games like Cooking Mama particularly fun. In Cooking Mama you move the stylus like you would move a cooking utensil, for example, stirring with a spoon or cutting with a knife. The dual screen is also used very nicely in some games, like Professor Layton and the Curious Village. I also found Sims 2 quite addictive. One of my daughter's favorites is Guitar Hero: On Tour, and some of her friends love playing Mario Kart DS with each other on the way to school. They can compete against each other with the integrated wi-fi. br /br /The only things that might make the DS better would be a bigger screen and maybe the ability to raise the volume a bit more. It is pretty quiet, even at its highest setting. It might be nice to have the ability to download shows to it, but I don't really miss that. All in all, I think this is the best handheld video game console on the market.
too much planned obsolescence January 3, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Nintendo DS Lite Crimson / Blackbr /Bought one just a year ago and it was fun. Then right after the warranty ran out, it quit working. Just stopped. The only options: Pay $85 and they'll send me a refurb in pink or black. If I want to keep the crimson, for which I paid extra, they'll look at it for $75 and if they can't fix it, they'll discuss my options. Whatever they might be. br /I haven't had any other electronics that lasted so short a time. Including ones I used a lot more. This bites.
DS metallic rose January 1, 2009 All three of my kids have a DS. Nice sized screen and the games have great graphics and as long as you buy games within the appropriate age level, you are sure to have fun. Perfect size for travel and hardly ever have to be charged.
