Sore arm... January 1, 2009 Fun, Fun, Fun... I am addicted, what more can I say, my sore arm tells the whole story. I know some find this game repetative and it can be, but I love the simple story line, and small challenges are really not that that hard to do, and you don't have to do them all to move on in the story. It does take some hand eye cordination, of which I'm still learning because we just got the Wii and all I've ever played is the PS3. I think anyone who wants mindless fun would like this game, after playing Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia on the PS3, this is a great break, I just wish my arm would agree.
Use plenty of white-out! December 31, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I really loved the concept of this game. Reading reviews, I thought it'd be the perfect game for my 8-year-old daughter.br /br /Unfortunately, the game is completely unplayable by her; it's way too hard and she gets easily frustrated. In fact, the game is way too hard for me too!br /br /The controls of this game are poorly implemented. We spend a lot of time missing jumps and having to climb back to where we were when we started, and all the while the clock is tick-tick-ticking down. Your character, Blob, jumps when you flick the Wii remote. Sometimes those flicks don't register completely, if at all. At other times, Blob makes the jump, but gets stuck on some little edge of a building or a cargo container, and you waste time trying to get him to unstick from the side of the wall and back to solid ground where you can retry the jump yet again.br /br /The nunchuck stick is used to steer Blob, and it's super sensitive. It's very easy to do circles around enemies, roll off of narrow walkways, etc, which again wastes time and causes you to have to reattempt challenges. There's a brake of sorts to stop Blob's zippy movements, but it would have been so much easier to just give the character better control.br /br /Blob moves through his world on a storyline, completing challenges to advance in the war against the Inkt Corporation. Sadly, it's not possible to save the game's progress until you've completed a whole chapter of that story, which can run from 40 minutes to well over an hour. If you need to quit (or get so frustrated you have to walk away), when you start the game again, you'll have to re-complete the challenges you've already finished to move ahead. Think of it as being required to read a book a chapter at a time, and if you get called to dinner on page 19, you're required to read the first 19 pages over again just to be allowed to read page 20.br /br /Worse, the toughest challenges are on page 20. If you can't complete the tough challenge, you can't save your progress.br /br /I really wanted to like this game. I even tried to play it in spite of the difficulties, but ultimately it proved to be too difficult. I'm not a professional game-player (is there such a thing?) but I've been able to work my way through every level (except two purple coin levels) of another excellent platformer game, Super Mario Galaxy. With sticktoitiveness like that, this game shouldn't be that hard for me. But it is. br /br /Steer clear.br /br /
De Blob is Way Fun! December 28, 2008 I got de Blob as a gift. I was honestly skeptical about the game before playing it, however, I changed my mind after the first five minutes of playing. I played for 4 1/2 hours straight after my son went to bed the night I began playing. I am addicted to say the least. The story is cute; paint the city with color after the Ink sucked it all away. The challenges throughout the levels are fun and entertaining. You can even replay the levels to beat your score and attain new goals. The levels have mini levels/games you unlock while playing the main level. Even having fun and bouncing off the city buildings just for the sake of acting crazy has helped me find items in the game. My husband and friends enjoy the game too. I definitely recommend this game.
awkward play December 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Maybe I didn't play it long enough to really get the moves down, but I was frustrated by how hard it is to move the little bouncy painter guy. It just wasn't fun after awhile, trying to get it to move in the right direction and bounce around. I like a game with more responsive controls.
Good gift for most ages, worth a few plays to anyone. December 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm tossing a review in here before I'm finished with the game to help folks who are buying gifts. Your younger kids can play this, and they will likely enjoy it. If they have trouble with the controls, there is a free paint option as well as a multiplayer option, and it appears that the main purpose of these modes is "Paint stuff! Have fun". I suspect my four year old niece would enjoy this.br /br /There's enough going on the game than older kids and adults are also likely to enjoy it. The graphics and music are a lot of fun and well designed. br /br /The New York Times listed this game as a Top 10 for 2008. I think this game is fine, but I don't agree with the NYT's high esteem. This is an inspired game that is well suited for all ages, yes, but I don't think that all ages inspiration alone creates a great game. I doubt anyone will care about this game in a year. But if you have no other gift ideas for Wii games, why not pick this one?br /br //end most useful information for shopping parentsbr /br /The cutscenes are lovely, and I am highly amused by the storyline and snippets of watered down, generic fight-the-power propaganda. (At one point, you get a challenge to paint the tenements red, "the color of the revolution!") I love it! I try not to take this game or review too seriously despite the very serious issues this game brings up. (I am definitely not bringing them into a review!)br /br /I'm not particularly impressed with the game play, but I'm only about half-way through the game so far. At some point in the storyline, it feels like the most you have to do is press Z/flick wrist, press Z/flick wrist, repeat ad nauseam. If other reviewers contradict me, I'd say believe them, but I'm not digging these controls yet. (I'll update if I decide otherwise.) Jumping by flicking your wrist is a bit awkward and I've noticed challenges that make me feel as if the only challenge is using the awkward jumping controls accurately without the Z button. (And this is not in the "wow, this is tough" way, but in the "wow, bad game design" way.)br /br /If you play the game seriously, the dearth of save points in the storyline mode is really annoying. I cannot stress this enough. I know my parents would have never understood this problem. What do you think would happen if a parent tells you to turn off the game system, and you reply, "I can't turn it off until I finish the level! It'll take at least another half an hour". You know they wouldn't let you keep the console on when you're not using it. And if you're a parent, you're going to hear that complaint from a kid who is playing this.br /br /Overall, this game is solid if annoying at times, and definitely worth a rental to me. I'm not sure it's worth [...] and space in my game shelf (unless I have four friends who really like the multiplayer paint mode). I'll be passing the game off to a friend once I've completed all the challenges in the storyline mode. I doubt I'll want to play it more than once.
