1 out of 5 stars EA dropped the ball with this one . . .   June 9, 2003

I am very dissappointed with this game. In the past the gamecube fifa franchise from ea seemed to improve with each new version but this one not only lacks improvements but features of previous versions weren't even included. brI've played fifa on nintendo since world cup 98 for n64 so I tried to give this game a shot, but after about 20-40 hours of play I've given up. brFirst they dropped the ability to curve the ball. You can curve the ball when doing free kicks provided you are close enough to the goal but otherwise cannot. Free kicks away from the goal provide no way to pass to a specific player and only let you choose a general direction. Next the great passing features of the last two nintendo fifas are also gone. Lob passes are basically uncontrollable, no give-and-go abilities, and very hard (maybe impossible) to do one-timers. It's also nearly impossible to win a header in the midfield let alone for a shot. The couple of times that I've scored off a cross at all the computer has done the work for me, I've just crossed it and the computer actually did the header for me (this is with the EA assistant turned off). Shooting is basically undefined, I have very little to no control as to where my shot goes no matter where I point the control stick. Also the instruction manual mentions individual moves that a player can do to get around the defender by using the c-stick. I've tried to do one of these moves by following the instructions in the manual about 100 times and haven't done a single move yet. Another drawback is the limited number of camera angles for gameplay as well as slow responses in the games menus. brIn addition to the gameplay limitiations I've noticed various bugs too. In fact just before writing this review the computer actually passed the ball back to the goalie to clear it while the goalie was out-of-bounds. Other bugs include a player on my team glitching and running straight off the field until he hit a wall and the goalie getting the ball stuck to his feet so that I couldn't pass it and could only let the opposing team steal it or run out of bounds to continue the game. Overall I feel that player and ball control has been seriously limited in this version and that much of the in-game action is out of the control of the player. I also think that this game could have spent much for time in development as there noticeable and oft-occurring bugs. EA should focus on gameplay improvements not cosmetic ones like player detail, extra kits, and extra stadiums. Don't buy this game if you like the last two fifa versions for nintendo.

4 out of 5 stars I'm very disappointed with this game.   May 13, 2003

I'm very disappointed with this product, because I bought it for my son to be given in Christmas and he just played for two times and the game got damage, I tried it to change in New York, Los Angeles and Miami and the answer I'd received is that there is not stock in the stores and they could not change it for another item. It has passed 5 months and I still have the game damaged, I live in Colombia and when I travel is the time I'd could change it.

4 out of 5 stars FIFA!   April 4, 2003

The second best Soccer franchise on earth. If you can get Winning Eleven Six, then don't bother with this one. If not, then buy this one instead. You'll still be happy.

4 out of 5 stars Still great....some great stuff missing   January 25, 2003

I loved FIFA 2002 World Cup. This is different though still the best thing out there. I have several quibbles though. One, the controls are different so once you go to 2003 it is HARD to go back and play previous versions (and there are reasons, see below). Two, as far as I can tell you can't curve the ball! Maybe I have missed it, but in 2002 it took a long time to perfect curving passes and shots, now you can;t. Shots go in much easier here. However, passing is painful. You see a man open up front but he;s behind a defender and you want to curve the ball to him - but you can;t. And your other players won;t pop open, it gets frustrating. Bending the ball is a basic soccer skill. I admit that when I first played 2002 I said ' why isn;t there a button you can hit to pass it directly to a guy', but after mastering the art of passing I loved it. Now the art is gone - and so are the options! Yes, you have to be tactical and work your way through - but it is not the way a real team works it. Further, the give-and-go option is gone, as far as I can tell. Lastly, I believe the free cam option is gone. Now you have to choose one of the set camera angles to watch a replay. I don;t even bother with replays anymore. br All in all it is still fun, but 2002 with the new stadiums, unis, faces would have been better. br And the new free kick option is cake. Anywhere within 30 yards (and out to 45!) you can easily put one in the upper 90 with a decent player. br There is also still the problem with the wandering of a guy when you click to him. You shift your control to a player and he will occasionally wander for a full second before he comes under your control. Major annoyance in both 2002 and 2003. br If you love 2002, try 2003 before buying. It is great but different.
